As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”—and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to diabetic feet. Diabetes can reduce circulation, damage nerves, and impair healing, making the feet especially vulnerable to infection and injury.

That’s why we recommend every person with diabetes see a chiropodist early—ideally as soon as they’re diagnosed. After an initial assessment, we establish a baseline and begin proactive care to protect your feet long-term

Diabetes can cause changes throughout the body, but its effects on the feet can be especially serious. Here’s how:

High blood sugar and blood pressure can damage blood vessels, reducing circulation to the legs and feet. Poor circulation slows healing and increases your risk of infection.

Diabetic neuropathy affects up to 50% of people with diabetes. Damaged nerves can lead to numbness, tingling, or pain—and often cause people to miss warning signs of injury. This can lead to unnoticed wounds, pressure ulcers, or even bone deformities (Charcot foot). Dry, cracked skin and calluses can also worsen due to reduced sensation and improper foot mechanics.

If left untreated, small issues can escalate quickly, leading to infection, hospitalization, or even amputation.

Our diabetic foot care begins with a detailed exam of the feet and lower legs, including:

  • Neurological assessment – tests nerve function and sensation
  • Vascular assessment – checks circulation and blood flow
  • Dermatological review – looks for dryness, cracks, wounds, or infections
  • Musculoskeletal screening – checks for alignment, gait issues, and structural risk factors

We’ll also discuss your risk level and create a personalized foot care plan that includes education, footwear guidance, and routine care to prevent complications before they start.

Simple daily habits can help prevent serious foot problems. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Inspect your feet daily – check for cuts, redness, swelling, or changes in colour
  • Wash and dry carefully – especially between the toes; use mild soap and warm (not hot) water
  • Moisturize – apply lotion to tops and bottoms of feet, but avoid between the toes
  • Trim nails safely – cut straight across and avoid sharp corners
  • Avoid self-treatment – never use razors or over-the-counter corn/wart products
  • Change socks daily – wear soft, seamless socks (inside out if needed)
  • Always wear footwear – even indoors; check shoes for objects or rough seams
  • Keep blood flowing – wiggle toes, avoid crossing legs, and stop smoking
  • Protect from temperature extremes – never test hot water with your feet or use heating pads

If you have trouble seeing or reaching your feet, ask a family member for help or book routine foot care with us.
